About this print
A sailing barge glides along a calm estuary under rust-red sails. Old working barges had sails that colour because the cloth was dressed with red ochre and oil to protect it from the weather. The banks are low sandy marsh, the sky is soft blue and grey, and the water reflects the red of the sails.
It's a warm, gentle picture and the red stands out on a pale wall. It suits a kitchen, a sitting room or a hallway. People who know the Essex and Kent estuaries, where barges like this still sail, often recognise the scene.
The red sails look rich on canvas. A framed poster in natural wood keeps the colours clean. 40x50 cm or 50x70 cm is a good size for most walls.
Cream, pale grey and soft blue walls make the red sails glow. For a set of traditional boats, add The Old Gaffer and The Schooner. The red also picks up any rust or terracotta already in a room, such as a rug or a cushion.
