How to use it

Put one boat on each line: a name or sail number, its Portsmouth Number, and its elapsed time, separated by commas. Times can be 41:30 or 1:02:03. A boat with no time gets a code instead, such as DNF or DNS, and is listed after the finishers.

The results update as you type. The setup lives in the link, so the race officer can send it round the club.

How it is worked out

Corrected time is elapsed time times 1,000, divided by the Portsmouth Number. A boat on 1390 that takes 46:20 has a corrected time of 33:20. The boat with the shortest corrected time wins.

We round corrected times to the whole second before ranking; tick the box to keep the fractions. Boats on equal corrected times share the place. Both are our rules, so use your club's sailing instructions if they differ.

Whose numbers?

The tool holds no numbers. The RYA publishes a national list each year as a starting point, and it says handicaps are set by clubs to suit local conditions. So type the numbers your club uses. Under the tool we show which RYA list is current, as we last checked it.

For clubs

The calculator can sit on your club's own website: the code to copy is under the tool. If you run a passage race, the sailing time calculator may help with the plan.

Questions, answered

How do you work out corrected time?
Elapsed time multiplied by 1,000, divided by the Portsmouth Number. Lowest corrected time wins.
Where do the PY numbers come from?
From your club. The RYA publishes a national list each year as a starting point, and clubs adjust numbers to suit their own racing.
Can we put it on our club website?
Yes. Copy the code under the tool. It shows the calculator in a frame with a credit link back to this page.
